Every piece that leaves our workshop in Jaipur has been touched by at least four pairs of hands.
The fabric is washed and prepared. The block is inked. The print is pressed - by hand, with pressure, with intention. The piece is dried in the sun, checked, folded.
It takes time to make. It is made to last.
But how long it lasts depends, in large part, on how it is cared for at home.
Over the years, the most common question we receive - after "what size should I order" is this: "How do I wash block printed clothes without ruining the print?"
This guide answers that completely.

Why Block Printed Cotton Needs a Little Extra Care
Hand block printing uses natural dyes pressed into fabric by hand. Unlike digital prints that sit on the surface of synthetic fabric, block prints are absorbed into the cotton weave itself.
This means two things:
One - the print becomes part of the fabric over time, softening and settling beautifully with each wash.
Two - harsh treatment in the early washes can cause the dye to bleed or fade faster than it should.
The care is not complicated. It just needs to be consistent.
Washing -The Right Way
First wash - always separate
Wash your block printed piece alone or with similar dark colours for the first two washes. Natural dyes release excess colour in the first wash - this is completely normal and not a sign of poor quality. It is simply the dye settling.
Cold or lukewarm water only
Hot water breaks down natural dye bonds faster. Always wash in cold or lukewarm water - this preserves both the print and the fabric softness.
Mild detergent - no harsh chemicals
Use a gentle, mild detergent. Avoid detergents with bleach, optical brighteners, or heavy fragrance. For children's clothing especially, a gentle detergent is better for the fabric and for sensitive skin.
Hand wash preferred - machine wash gentle
Hand washing is always the kindest option for block printed cotton. If using a machine, use the gentle or delicate cycle. Never a heavy or hot wash.
Do not soak for long periods
A quick soak of 5-10 minutes is fine. Leaving block printed fabric soaking for hours causes the dye to bleed unevenly and weakens the cotton weave over time.
Wash inside out
Turn the garment inside out before washing. This protects the printed surface from friction during the wash cycle and keeps the print vivid for longer.
Drying - Simple but Important
Dry in shade, not direct harsh sunlight
Natural light is fine - harsh direct afternoon sun for extended periods fades natural dyes faster than anything else. Dry in a shaded or semi-shaded spot.
Do not wring
Wringing twists the fabric and distorts the print. Gently squeeze out excess water and hang flat or on a hanger to dry.
Dry inside out
Same principle as washing - keep the printed surface protected while drying.
Do not tumble dry
Heat from tumble dryers is harsh on natural dyes and cotton weave both. Air dry always.
Ironing - Quick and Easy
Iron inside out on medium heat
Always iron block printed cotton inside out. Medium heat is sufficient -cotton does not need high heat to smooth out.
Do not iron directly on the print
Direct iron contact on the printed surface can cause the print to crack or fade over time, especially on heavily printed areas.
Light steam is fine
A light steam iron works well on cotton. Avoid pressing down hard on printed sections.
Storage - Making It Last Between Seasons
Block printed cotton stores beautifully if done right.
Wash before storing
Always wash and fully dry before folding away for the season. Storing with any moisture or residue weakens fabric over time.
Fold, do not hang for long term
Long term hanging stretches the fabric at the shoulders. Fold neatly and store flat.
Store in cotton or muslin bags
Avoid plastic bags for long term storage - cotton and muslin allow the fabric to breathe. Plastic traps moisture and can cause yellowing.
Keep away from direct light
Store in a drawer or cupboard away from direct light. Prolonged light exposure fades natural dyes even when not being worn.
Cedar or neem leaves over mothballs
If storing for a full season, use cedar blocks or dried neem leaves instead of chemical mothballs. Kinder to natural fabric and natural dye both.
What to Expect as the Piece Ages
Hand block printed cotton is one of those rare things that gets better with time.
The fabric softens with each wash. The print settles into the weave and takes on a slightly worn, lived-in quality that machine prints never achieve. The colours deepen rather than fade - if cared for correctly.
A well-cared-for block printed nightsuit or dress from Chheent Jaipur will outlast most fast fashion pieces by years. We have customers whose children have passed pieces down to younger siblings - the fabric still soft, the print still vivid.
That is what handmade means. Not fragile. Enduring.
